Choiceless Awareness
Each of the 6 Declarations of Heart Radiance has profound implications for all aspects of our being. Spaciousness & Freedom associated with the “Heaven” aspect, relate to the quality of consciousness. This implies the quality of our choices, and also cultivation of the ability to be fully present in the living of those choices. This “being fully present” is another way of saying “being fully committed” to the acting out of our choices. Full commitment implies undistracted attention, in the moment, and is our single-minded way of expressing Choiceless Awareness in our lives. Realise that successfully living out Choiceless Awareness begins in the mind. We must first know what it’s like to experience the condition of intentional not-choosing of thoughts. Only out of that expansive stillness can actions arise spontaneously and with natural integrity. Actually, being in the “here and now” is somewhat theoretical as a concept, but to understand how that feels, all we need to do is engage ourselves deliberately and with persistence in the habit of choosing the way of no-choice. The way we live our lives and the fruit of our actions depends almost exclusively on the way we use our attention-energy. This is an important fact-- check it out for yourself.
Random, discursive patterns of thought squander our attention, our most precious resource for creating our reality as we prefer it to be. Old, outworn beliefs and habit-patterns need attention-energy to sustain them, like a plant needs energy from the sun. Without being nurtured by attention, these beliefs and patterns atrophy, wilt, and become less and less powerful as behavioral triggers. The persistent cultivation of Choiceless Awareness empowers us to reclaim our ability to direct our attention in a way that is optimal for our evolution, as the distracting inner noises of “the doubter,” “the failure,” “the inner critic,” etc., gradually fade and cease to influence our lives. Coherent attention results in spontaneity of thought and action, and an increasing sense of freedom. In this way, new possibilities open up for our growth, and there is a natural tendency to exchange contractive, fear-based patterns for the more expansive, whole-hearted embrace of “Grace & Love.”
A good time to practice Choiceless Awareness is upon completion of Resonant Tuning, while “sitting in rapture.” As the energies of Heaven, Earth, and Being are exceptionally harmonised at this time, with single-pointed focus on Grace & Love, this harmony, this focus, will act as an ally to our stillness of mind. Another very good opportunity to practice Choiceless Awareness is in the stillness of the night, just before sleep or upon waking, or perhaps during the night, should you have episodes of wakefulness. As you continue to practice this way, you will find that your periods of sleep will lengthen and you will sleep more deeply. The stillness of night is ideal for cultivating the habit of Choiceless Awareness within the depths of the mind: however we may find it more challenging to apply this habit to daily life. Yet, it can be applied, with great benefit, to any activity. In a word, activity infused with Choiceless Awareness is simply “whole-hearted doing.” It is interesting that, in the Chinese language, the character Hsin means both “heart” and “mind.” So, perhaps we could say that in any language, whole-hearted doing implies whole-minded doing. In other words, any action performed when the mind is in an undistracted state is an action springing out of Choiceless Awareness. Such an action will be executed with ease and precision, and the results will be optimal, because whole-hearted attention in the moment is always the most we can give. So it is with the practice of Heart Radiance: the more Choiceless Awareness we bring to the practice, the more potent the results will be. The more effective the practice, the easier it will be to experience an even deeper state of Choiceless Awareness as you sit in Rapture.
